International Organizations under Pressure

How and why have the norms that underpin our evaluations of international organizations changed after the Cold War? In their book International Organizations under Pressure, Klaus Dingwerth and his co-authors argue that the list of normative expectations organizations like the World Trade Organization, the African Union or the Office of the UN High Commissioner on Refugees face has significantly expanded over time. As people-based and procedural standards have been added, global governance need adapt – and often expand – their justification efforts. At a time when international organizations are needed most to deal with the consequences of globalization, their legitimation has thus become most challenging.
